MIKE DOW: – Welcome to Woof Meow with Don Hanson here on Star 977. When it comes to pets, how to best care for them, how to train them, and how to make that bond with your pet even stronger, do what so many people in Maine do: they go to Don Hanson at Green Acres Kennel Shop, 1653 Union Street in Bangor and online at greenacreskennel.com, and at the ForceFreePets website at forcefreepets.com
DON: – All of us have heard about fires where people and pets are seriously injured or killed. Here are some fire facts everyone should know. Approximately 80% of all fires occur in a private home; therefore, if your pet encounters a fire, they are most likely to do so in your home. We often leave pets alone in our homes, and they typically cannot rescue themselves. Nearly 1000 fires a year are started by a family pet. Typically, you only have about 2 to 5 minutes to escape a fire. That’s very little time to get yourself out, much less your pets. After the break, I’ll discuss things you can do to protect your family, pets included, from fire.
MIKE DOW: – For 30 years, Don has been owner and operator of Green Acres Kennel Shop, 1653 Union Street in Bangor, offering pet supplies, boarding, daycare, and grooming. Learn more at greenacreskennel.com. Don also offers education for pets and their people at forcefreepets.com.
DON: – Please, install smoke and fire alarms in your house. Monitored alarms that automatically call the fire department offer the best protection. Put a sticker on all entrances to your home indicating pets are present. Install fire extinguishers in your home and ensure everyone knows how to use them. Develop a family fire plan and practice your plan at least twice a year. The plan should include two ways to exit every room, where you will meet once you get outside, how to call 9-1-1, how to Stop, Drop & Roll if on fire, and which adults will be responsible for the pets. For more information on protecting your pets from the danger of fire, please read my blog at forcefreepets.com.
