MIKE DOW: – Welcome to Woof Meow with Don Hanson here on Star 977. When it comes to pets, how to best care for them, how to train them, and how to make that bond with your pet even stronger, do what so many people in Maine do: they go to Don Hanson at Green Acres Kennel Shop, 1653 Union Street in Bangor and online at greenacreskennel.com, and at the ForceFreePets website at  forcefreepets.com

DON: – Like it or not, the temperatures are starting to drop, and it will get colder before we see the sunny days of Spring. Daylight is decreasing, and the hunters are out and about. If you are out between dusk and dawn, or even during the day, dressing yourself and your dog in orange is a recommended safety precaution, even if it’s not the most stylish choice. It may be cold enough that some of our older dogs or those with less hair might appreciate a coat or sweater. If you or your dog are in need of a coat, now is the time to buy. These are seasonal items and aren’t’ always available year-round. After the break, I’ll be back with some additional fall and early winter tips

MIKE DOW: – For 31 years, Don has been owner and operator of Green Acres Kennel Shop, 1653 Union Street in Bangor, offering pet supplies, boarding, daycare, and grooming. Learn more at. greenacreskennel.com. Don also offers education for pets and their people at forcefreepets.com.

DON: – Just because it’s getting colder, please don’t stop checking yourself or your pets for ticks. And remember, even if your dog is vaccinated for Lyme disease, that vaccine does not protect against the many other tick-borne diseases that can make our canine friends sick. The snow may not be here yet, but it’s time to get the shovels out so you are ready on day one. Remember, you will need to be shoveling out bathroom areas and pathways for your dogs of short stature, or who are seniors, or who are like me and dislike snow. Check out my article on Winter Weather Tips for Pets for more information on making winter pleasurable for your pets. You can find that at ForceFreePets.com
