“Heart Dog” was a term I heard frequently from my friends and colleagues in the pet care professions, often after a dog’s passing. I had an inkling of what the term meant, but there was enough variation in the way people used it that I was unsure. As I cared for Muppy during the last several months of her life, I thought about all the wonderful moments we had shared. I thought “Heart Dog” might be the best way to describe our relationship. So, I did some research, talking to trusted friends and AI chatbots. Below, you can review what I learned.

What Pet Care Professionals Say About “Heart Dogs”

Thank you to my friends: Teoti Anderson, Debbie Sheridan, Kim Silver, Zazie Todd, and Niki Tudge, for sharing how they define “Heart Dog.”

  • Teoti AndersonA Dog’s Best Friend“I’m not sure any definition could ever encompass what a heart dog means to a person. I have loved all my dogs. I have loved other people’s dogs. But a heart dog surpasses that, taking up a special room in your heart and soul and making it their residence forever. My Cody, a three-legged Labrador Retriever, was my heart dog. He changed my life. In training him, I learned I had a knack for it and followed a path that led me to a fulfilling career, writing multiple books, and speaking at conferences all over the world. I went through a divorce with Cody comforting me through the tragedy. He was a therapy dog and brought joy to so many people. He was just … special. When he passed, I think a part of me went with him. I had mourned dogs before, but this was like a physical chunk of me was ripped away. It was awful, encompassing grief. He was worth every tear. When I think of him now, decades later, I’m still filled with so much love. He changed me, and I am ever the better person for having him in my life.”
  • Debbie Sheridan–Debbie’s 4 Dogs –  “A heart dog is a 4-legged soul who is so dear to you that you can’t imagine life without them. A heart dog might change your life and even change WHO you are as well as your life path. A heart dog is someone who you would do absolutely anything for, maybe even stop having parties because a group of guests over didn’t feel good to him. A heart dog is one of the greatest and deepest loves of your life. When they leave, they take a piece of your soul.”
  • Kim Silver–Building Bonds Training“I think all dogs are special, but I think what makes a heart dog so special is that they’re with us at a time in our life when the relationship we have with them supports us in some way with whatever is happening in our life at that time that makes us need them or appreciate them more.”
  • Dr. Zazie Todd–Companion Animal Psychology – “A heart dog is one who means even more to you than any of the other dogs you’ve had.”
  • Niki Tudge–The Pet Professional Guild & Dognostics“In my experience, every dog I’ve owned has been a heart dog. Each one has brought something deeply significant into my life, leaving a distinct ‘before and after’ impact on who I am. I’ve shared that intense empathy and silent language—communicating with just a glance—with every single one of them.”

What AI Bots Say About “Heart Dogs”

While my relationship with AI is based on the philosophy of “Don’t trust, until verified,” I thought it would provide a summary of what a large bulk of humanity may have said about “Heart Dogs” online. I’ve sorted them by the themes mentioned most often.

Once in A Lifetime

  • That once-in-a-lifetime canine companion with whom you share an almost telepathic, soul-deep connection. [Gemini]
  • A dog with which you have an extraordinary, once-in-a-lifetime bond, so strong that it feels like they’re part of your soul. [GPT-5.3]
  • That one special dog in a person’s life who creates an extraordinarily profound and unique bond – a once-in-a-lifetime connection that touches the soul in ways other pets, even beloved ones, do not. [Claude]

Intuitive Emotional Connection

  • They exhibit intense empathy, understanding our emotions better than anyone. [Gemini]
  • We feel unusually connected to them (almost intuitive understanding). [GPT-5.3]
  • They seem to understand your emotions intuitively. [Claude]

Uniqueness

  • Not all dogs are “Heart Dogs or “soulmates” but may be great companions, and that’s okay. [Gemini]
  •  People often say you can love many dogs in your life, but a heart dog is irreplaceable. [GPT-5.3]
  • The term acknowledges that while we may love many pets throughout our lives, there’s often that one special soul who changes us forever – teaching us about unconditional love, loyalty, and the profound connections possible between species. [Claude]
