MIKE DOW: – Welcome to Woof Meow with Don Hanson here on Star 977. When it comes to pets, how to best care for them, how to train them, and how to make that bond with your pet even stronger, do what so many people in Maine do: they go to Don Hanson at Green Acres Kennel Shop, 1653 Union Street in Bangor and online at greenacreskennel.com. And Don is also the force behind the great website, forcefreepets.com

DON 10 lines: –  Wikipedia describes dog walking as “…the act of a person walking with a dog, typically from the dog’s residence and then returning.” Sadly, the definition suggests nothing about the walk being enjoyable or, better yet, fun for the dog. Many people with dogs still view walking the dog as an obligation to ensure their dog gets physical exercise, which entails walking around the block or some other regular course at an unvarying pace with the dog in a perfect heel position. BOOORIIING! That’s not the type of walk where your dog will thrive. Walking in lockstep with another living being is NOT normal canine behavior. After the break, I’ll discuss how to make your walk both fun and mentally enriching for your dog.

MIKE DOW: – For 30 years, Don has been owner and operator of Green Acres Kennel Shop, 1653 Union Street in Bangor, offering pet supplies, boarding, grooming, and training. Learn more at greenacreskennel.com and at the new website forcefreepets.com

DON 8 lines: The ideal walk for a dog is a meandering journey where they follow their nose, often stop to sniff, enjoy the moment, and then choose where they will go next. Our dog’s mental health benefits considerably when we can give them choices, just like we do best when we have a choice. Please! Give your dog choices! Allow them to stop and sniff. It’s what makes their walk joyful. Please don’t take the same walk, day after day; mix it up! For more tips on making your dog’s walk a joyful event, check out my blog at ForceFreepets.com and the post, Walking the Dog-Please, Make it Enjoyable. Happy Walking to You and Your Dog!
