MIKE DOW: – Welcome to Woof Meow with Don Hanson here on Star 977. Don is among the most widely respected pet care professionals, and I have come to him with countless questions over the years. you will hear many of those answers here on Woof Meow.
DON HANSON: There are reports of Canine Cough, also known as kennel cough, in the area. We typically see an outbreak in Maine at least once a year. Many bacteria and viruses can cause this illness hence, its official name is Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex. Like the common cold for humans, it is highly contagious. It involves inflammation of a dog’s trachea and upper bronchi, which can cause an irritating cough. It can be transmitted through the air from one dog to the next, from a communal water bowl, or even in the grass where you walk your dog. Dog-to-dog contact is not required. The canine cough vaccine can prevent many cases, but it is not always effective like the flu vaccine for people. I’ll have some tips on avoiding canine cough after the break.

DON HANSON: If your dog is coughing repeatedly, they should be seen by their veterinarian. While canine cough often resolves on its own, there are several other infections, as well as cardiac issues, that can cause coughing, which can be fatal if not treated. In addition, pneumonia can result as a secondary infection to canine cough. The best way to prevent your dog from becoming infected is to avoid other dogs. However, as noted above, your dog can become infected by sniffing areas where another dog has been, so avoid those areas, especially communal water bowls. If your dog does not need to go with you, it may be best to leave them at home until the outbreak passes.
